SUPERVISED CLINICAL TRAINING

This process begins in the third year of studies when the competent student will be offered Student Clinical Membership, under supervision and with the necessary insurance (subject to BSH approval). It comprises case taking and analysis of real cases, either in the School clinic or elsewhere, by the student who, after working on the case, consults with a supervisor as to the proper treatment for the case. The student is then able to prescribe for the patient with the agreement of the supervisor, and works with the supervisor and the patient throughout the course of that patient’s treatment. This method is followed for all the students’ patients.
Supervised clinical training continues for a minimum period of one academic year. Subject to at least sixty satisfactory supervised case consultations and fulfilling the graduation and fitness to practice criteria, the competent Licentiate will be considered for graduation from the School.

In supervised casework when the students are learning their skills in practise, the supervisors have a safety and advisory role rather than solely an instructional one. This means that students are encouraged to take their own views on the indicated remedies and are allowed to take their own decisions as to the proper action to take, subject to the supervisors view of the safety of their action.

‘Progression towards taking increased responsibility

for patients is staged appropriately and is

supported at all levels by all staff, particularly the

clinic coordinator in the final year’.

‘Students have excellent opportunities to develop as competent and effective practitioners’.
